Was Toastmaster for a fabulous wedding last Saturday. It was at Ettington Park, just the other side of Stratford.
What a gorgeous venue! It is an amazing Victorian Gothic pile and is just so over the top it's untrue! However the staff were excellent and I worked with some very good people, notably Lee Glasgow, the photographer.
Best of all though were the bride and bridegroom, Sheena and Paul. They were an absolute delight and it was such fun to be their Master of Ceremonies. They just seemed to have such a good time!
Had a day or two off after that before doing the actor bit with Robin Hood in Bradford on Tuesday, So I went to Whitby.
What a seriously cool place. Did manage to visit an execrable Dracula Experience, but it only cost £3, so they got away with it. What was really funny was that at the end of the tour you were exited out of a back door into a side street. It was all very reminiscent of an old, old joke.
The hotel was pretty good, but what made it stand out was the breakfast menu. It was entitled "Breakfasts From around The World". I kid you not. It started with Full English, naturally, but we also had Scottish, Irish, Norwegian, Danish, French, Greek, Turkish, American ..... and the list went on. This caused great hilarity!
I, unfortunately, lost my sense of adventure and plumped for the English! Not that there's anything wrong with that, it has to be said.
The only downside was the distinct lack of Goths.
I love Goths.
The English Civil War Society is a great institution. They are keen and knowledgeable and often put on some Very Good Displays. Which brings me to my point. They cause me much amusement.
Some years ago they set fire to a stubble field that was being used as a car park at one of their battles, but much more recently there was this........................
THE SIEGE OF BRAMPTON BRYAN.
Not only am I eternally grateful that I live in a country that has villages of such names, but they have battles!
The Castle of Brampton Bryan was represented by some huge straw bales. The besieging Cavaliers fired their cannon. The effect of such weapons must have been terrifying in the day - watch..........
I LOVE IT!
Finally a plug for a radio series. "Fags, Mags and Bags" is a comedy on BBC Radio 4. This week it came out with the great line,
"Would you care for a suausage roll?"
"No, but I'd eat one".
Some very exciting weddings to report on next week.
Live Long And Be Toastmastered
